Etruscan Revival jewelry was popular from the mid 1800's through the 1880's and was inspired by archaeological discoveries of the ancient Etruscan tombs in Italy. These tombs contained intricate high carat gold jewelry which led to a frenzy among Victorians for this style which was very popular with Victorian tourists on the "Grand Tour". This trend peaked in the late 1850's and ended by the 1880's.
The Etruscans flourished in Italy from 800 b.c to 300 b.c before being absorbed by the Roman Empire. They were known for advanced gold work techniques. Key characteristics included granulation (gold beading), scrollwork, filagree and ornate designs.
